But they also offer tennis lessons for nonmembers, including young children. For more information call 323-464-3195
Incorporated as a Woman’s Club in 1894, the Ebell of Los Angeles has been at its present site at the southwest corner of Wilshire and Lucerne since 1927. The facility, one of the architectural gems of our area, is a national, state and city historic site. Each year the Ebell sponsors over one hundred college scholarships and, in association with several other nonprofits, funds respite care and abuse shelters throughout the city. The Ebell also contains a banquet hall well known to Windsor Square Association members, inasmuch as it has often been the site of our annual meeting in November. For

Windsor Square shares its history with Hancock Park (click here for a more complete history - Adobe Reader required) and so it is appropriate that one historical society represent them both. The Windsor Square-Hancock Park Historical Society is open to individuals and families who are interested in learning more about the rich history of our “urban oasis.” The Society offers a number of annual events including Home Tours, Spring Garden and Holiday Decoration Awards, monthly members’ programs of special interest and the publication, Historical Observer. For more information or to become a member call 213-243-8182.
Recently the Los Angeles Fire Department started an Adopt-A-Fire Station program to bring firefighters and the neighborhoods they serve closer together and, more practically, to provide a means for improving the living and working conditions for firefighters, a need which tight city budgets simply won’t address. Friends of 29 was formed by several Windsor Square residents to support Engine Company 29. Located at 4029 Wilshire Boulevard (corner of Van Ness), “29” covers virtually all of Windsor Square, from First Street south. Friends of 29 provides a number of events throughout the year, which not only raise money for the station, but are great opportunities for neighbors to get together. If you are interested in becoming involved with Friends of 29 or for information regarding upcoming events call 213-485-6229. |
