Windsor Square Association Hosts Successful Block Captain Event

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Sixty Windsor Square Association block captains and guests gathered at the South Norton home of Larry and Wendy Guzin on September 14th to dine, socialize and better their efforts to serve the Windsor Square community.  Block captains are volunteer liaisons between their neighbors and the board of directors of the Association.  This was the first gathering of block captains in over 10 years.

After a buffet diner catered by Prado restaurant, a speakers’ program to invigorate and inform began with a welcome and thank you to the block captains by Association president Larry Guzin.

Following, emergency preparedness information was provided by block captain coordinator Wendy Savage, including expert advice by LAFD speaker Kurt Howard, a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) instructor.  Howard emphasized the importance of off-concrete home storage of at least one gallon of water a day for each resident for an estimated two-week emergency period.

Presentations on crime prevention methods were provided by LAPD Wilshire and Olympic commanders Eric Davis and Tina Nieto, joined by Senior Lead Officers David Cordova and Joe Pelayo.

Other guests included board of directors of the Association and former Association president Carolyn Ramsay, now deputy chief of staff for Councilmember Tom LaBonge.

After the event, South Irving Boulevard block captain Dena Bloom commented, “Last night was a wonderful event.  Not only were we spoiled by the beautiful and gracious home and delicious food, but we were enlightened and energized.”

Along with Guzin and Savage, Association directors Katie Jones-Badami, Andrew Woodward and June Bilgore helped organize the successful event.
